I was unable to show my dogs towards the end of the year, so not really much to report. Xanthe won a couple of RCCs to end the year top English Setter 2014. Also topping the breed again stud dog Sh Ch Mariglen Pengtsson’s Legacy and top brood bitch again Sh Ch Mariglen Princess Royal. We again took the title Top Breeder.
25.9.2019 Here we are at the end of September and the summer shows are drawn to a close. It has been a fantastic summer at Mariglen. Two litters of puppies, Frankie had seven puppies, the sired by Swannery Valentino’s Legacy To Caspellwynd. I didn’t plan to keep a puppy but fate has taken a hand and Feather has joined the team. Kitty had just two puppies by Bournehouse Silver Wings, what bonny little chaps. There really isn’t room for any more at the moment so these two little chaps have the most wonderful homes, one in the north of Scotland and the other in Cornwall, couldn’t be further apart.
I am heart broken to have had to say goodbye to the wonderful, beautiful Sh Ch Fenston Arabella At Mariglen. Tixi Field was twelve and a half years when she crossed the Rainbow Bridge at the beginning of September. She leaves an unbelievable legacy. She is the dam of Sh Ch Mariglen Pengtsson’s Legacy, who is again currently top stud dog for the year. She is the dam of Sh Ch Mariglen Francesca Fenston, the breed’s youngest ever show champion, titled at sixteen months. She is the great grandmother of Sh Ch Mariglen Xanthe, who is currently leading the breed on the show circuit. Thank you Tixi.
What a fantastic time this summer has been for the Mariglen show team. Birmingham National saw Tereza Watkins Sh Ch Mariglen Snowdrift at Hayworth winning the DCC and BOB, litter sister Linda Lawson’s Sh Ch Mariglen Ice Crystal the BCC and Mariglen Xanthe the RBCC. SKC was so special and I missed it as I stayed at home with Frankie and her new babies. So thank you the Brenda and Mel for taking Xanthe, and Suzy Roffy for showing her to her third CC and BOB from Andrew Brace, and then going on to win the gundog group under Meriel Hathaway. A very special day indeed, and not to be outdone, Brenda won the RBCC with Mariglen Mercedes (photo by Jill Davies/Tereza Watkins).
No one went to Bath this year as I judged our breed and enjoyed a really lovely entry of top quality English Setters. Next show was Southern Counties. This time Snowdrift won the DCC and Xanthe the BCC, BOB and group three under Dr Ron James. Border Union (judge Aleks Greenhalgh) and Xanthe wins the CC and BOB and group shortlist. Blackpool didn’t have CCs but we went and won BOB with Xanthe. Paignton (Richard Bott) where Josh won the DCC and Xanthe wins the RBCC.
National Gundog (Dawn Goutorbe) Lux, Dutch,Int Ch Mariglen Nina Valentina (photo by Jill Davies/Tereza Watkins) and Eddy Deville travel from Belgium and win the RCC.
Welsh Kennel (Sarah Sevastapulo) Xanthe BCC and BOB, and group shortlist. Snowdrift (Josh) won the DCC. SKC II was a tough one as Suzy, Xanthe’s usual handler was judging Irish Setters, so it was up to Brenda and me. I handled her in her class (judge John Thirwell) and Brenda did the leg work. We managed to win the CC and BOB. Brenda took on the big ring and did a great job even though Xanthe was really being a bit of a madam and although not placed, they made the cut to the last six.
Birmingham City (Val Isherwood) and Xanthe won her eighth CC and seventh BOB. Richmond (Anne Lewis) and it was Nora’s turn to shine. Linda and my Mariglen Gift Wrapped (photo by Jill Davies/Tereza Watkins) won her second CC.
Darlington and it was Josh again with the DCC and BOB. Driffield (Karen Stirk) no CCs but a good day for the team. BD was Josh, BB, BOB and again down to the last six in the gundog group was Xanthe. RBB Ice Crystal.
Winning at championship shows this summer also were Mariglen Royal Flame owned by Brenda Seaman and me, Mariglen Perfect Day (Stirk family), Mariglen Blue Star (Emily Bennett), Mariglen Nina Fever (Margaret McCabe) Mariglen Flaming Sunset (Mel Sharples), Mariglen Dandino at Windyridge (Mauren Coe and Karen Forbes) Mariglen Prince Charming (Sheenagh Hay).
Brenda Seaman now has a share in my kennel name Mariglen. Suzy Roffey is now co-owner of Xanthe.
20.4.14 English Setter Association Championship Show. Judges Cheryl Smith (Soberhill) dogs, Anne Dykes (Caleydene) bitches. Xanthe wins her 2nd CC and ends the day Best In Show. (referee Valerie Foss, Elswood). Big thanks to Suzy Roffey for again handling Xanthe. Mercedes won three classes including junior bitch, Gayle was 2nd in limit, Nina Fever, 4th limit, and Gift Wrapped 4th mid limit, Blue Flame was 1st open dog and Blue Star 3rd junior dog, 1st tyro and 4 special beginners.
6.4.14 English Setter Society Of Wales championship show. Judge Jill Kelly (Richecca). Xanthe 2nd special yearling and the RCC. Gift Wrapped (Nora) 1st mid limit, Crystal Gayle 1st limit.
I am really behind with my news for this year so here is a short resume of what has happened atMariglen since the beginning of 2014. 2013 was a really spectacular year and I hope this year will be as special. We made a good start. Xanthe won her class at Manchester in January, and litter sister Argenta at Cransett was second, Mercedes won puppy bitch, Nora was second in her class and Blue Flame won the RCC. A couple of weeks later we went to Midland English Setter Society championship show. Again Xanthe won her class, (Suzy Roffey handling, many thanks). Last year I handled Nora (Gift Wrapped) for Linda as she is on the committee and although allowed to enter her dogs, is not allowed to handle. So it was that again I handled Nora and was thrilled to win mid limit with her and at the end of the day Nora won her first challenge certificate. Her elder brother Snow Drift won the DCC and BIS and Nora RBIS. Thanks judges Di Morgan (Dogs) and Linda Taylor (bitches), Audi, who has told us he really doesn’t like showing very much was 2nddog class. Crufts has been and gone. Xanthe won her last junior class, Nora was 2ndAudi was third in special puppy and litter brother Archie was fourth. So here we are up to date.
